New Jersey Highway Shoulder Crashes
A shocking number of people are killed in crashes on highway shoulders each year. Stopping on the highway is incredibly dangerous, especially at night when visibility is reduced. Sometimes drivers think that stopped cars are just traveling in a nearby lane until they are rudely awakened by a collision.
An estimated 12 percent of all fatal crashes involve highway shoulders. 19 percent of all car accidents happen either on the shoulder or median of a roadway. Stopped vehicles are not expected, and sometimes drivers are not able to react quickly enough to avoid a crash.
